There is hardly anything known of her life and motivations. A local laird \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catherine_Murray,_Lady_Abercairny\" title=\"Catherine Murray, Lady Abercairny\"\u003eRobert Murray\u003c\/a\u003e of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abercairny\" title=\"Abercairny\"\u003eAbercairny\u003c\/a\u003e was involved in her arrest and trial. He asked his sister-in-law, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Annabell_Murray,_Countess_of_Mar\" title=\"Annabell Murray, Countess of Mar\"\u003eAnnabell Murray, Countess of Mar\u003c\/a\u003e for advice. She was at time the head of the household of the king, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_VI_of_Scotland\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"James VI of Scotland\"\u003eJames VI\u003c\/a\u003e, at \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stirling_Castle\" title=\"Stirling Castle\"\u003eStirling Castle\u003c\/a\u003e. In September 1577 Annabell Murray, Countess of Mar wrote to Robert Murray, telling not to come to Stirling Castle, because Regent Morton was coming. The Laird of Abercairny wanted to bring Violet Mar to Stirling, and Annabell Murray advised him to get written statements from her accusers. This was the second letter on the subject from the Countess of Mar, and she was clearly active in planning the trial of Violet Mar. It has been suggested that the Countess helped form the attitudes of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_VI_of_Scotland\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"James VI of Scotland\"\u003eJames VI of Scotland\u003c\/a\u003e towards women accused of witchcraft.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn 10 October 1577 a royal messenger, Robert Binning, was sent from Edinburgh to summon Margaret Murray, Lady Clackmannan (another sister of Catherine Murray, Lady Abercairney and the Countess of Mar), the Laird of Abercairny and his wife Catherine Murray, and others, to come before the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Privy_Council_of_Scotland\" title=\"Privy Council of Scotland\"\u003ePrivy Council\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eon 18 October.
